Is it putting the cart before the dog, so to speak, or
the more usual dog before the cart? We aren’t sure
if the recent proliferation of dog-friendly lodgings is
a response to an increase in the number of people
who vacation with their dogs; or if it’s a case of if
you make them welcome, they will come.

But it has been widely noted of late that the number
of travel accommodations that welcome pets has
increased, and the pet tourist population is burgeoning
along with them.

ANIMALS IN TRANSLATION

Many years ago when my wife and I were motor-scootering
through Europe we visited the Rotterdam zoo. There I noticed
people reaching through the bars of a cage to pet a willing
lioness, who was enjoying the good weather with her cubs.

Of course I wanted to pet her too, but my wife’s wisdom
prevailed and we just watched. Later, we discovered the
lioness was a sister of the famous Elsa of Born Free, and
that she was a sweet, affectionate creature who enjoyed a
good scratch behind the ears. The point is, even before I saw
other people reaching through the cage’s bars, I felt drawn to the
lioness and safe with her. Her attitude was welcoming; I responded viscerally.

ANGEL BY MY SIDE
Reviewed By Lori Castle

In 1994, the scorching Texas heat and a chain attached to a
stake served as home for a young, half-starved, heartworm
infested, “golden-red dog.”  Karen Costello of the Greater
Houston Golden Retriever Club (GHGRC), which also served
as a rescue organization for the breed, received a phone call
about this abandoned pooch. As she approached the yard
where he was tied, something in this dog’s eyes made her
realize that this animal was extra special. She named him
Dakota, which is the “Native American word for friend.” This
was the beginning of an amazing and inspirational story of
dog who was given up on and a man who gave up on life.

If you’re a pet lover, you know that angels don’t always come
with wings. Sometimes, an angel will have fur and claws, teeth
and a tail. And sometimes, the angel has no hair and is facing
the hardest thing anyone should endure. And sometimes,
those angels are meant for one another.
