Get Educated About Vaccination Risks

By SHEILA ABRAMS

It is not news to veterinarians that the
vaccinations routinely administered to
companion animals carry some risks with
them. Anytime a foreign object or a fluid is
introduced under the skin, there are dangers:
allergic reactions, infections and other
potential risks, against which the health care
professional takes precautions. These risks
are usually not life threatening and can generally be prevented or controlled.

The Abyssinian: An Ancient And Noble Heritage
By MARJORIE DORFMAN

Although it is known for certain that the Abyssinian cat is one of the world’s oldest known
breeds of felines, its exact history is open to conjecture and shrouded in mystery. The
name of the breed comes from Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia), from where it is thought
this elegant cat originates. The first Abyssinian cats exhibited in shows in England were
said to have been imported from there.

LIVING WITH A DIABETIC CAT
BY ELSIE WALKER

Going up to the pharmacy counter at the local grocery store, Bernetta, the pharmacy
technician, is there to greet me.
“Picking up?” she asks.
“Yes.”
“For you or Petey?”
“For Petey, his insulin and needles,” I say.

Bernetta climbs a little step ladder to get the needles which are always meticulously
placed above the prescription pick-up shelves. She grabs the box for Petey Walker.
Climbing down, she goes into a little refrigerator, takes out the insulin with Petey’s name
on it and puts it into a prescription bag. She hands me the items, has me sign and pay
for them, as usual.  Before I leave, she makes sure to ask about Petey.
“How is Petey? Give him a pat for me,”she says.
By the way, did I mention... Petey is my cat.

By MARJORIE DORFMAN

The Somali cat is considered to be a longhaired
cousin of the ancient Abyssinian, and its long and

to eliminate it from their breeding stock.

In the l960s, however, cat fanciers began to
appreciate the exquisite beauty of these creatures
and the breed was born, named for Somalia, the
country bordering Abyssinia.

BY SHEILA ABRAMS

“No cat is going to do that,” said a spectator, observing the agility course. “They're just too
independent to be trained.”

Watching the goings on in the mesh-enclosed arena for a while, it was hard to disagree
with that assessment, and other observers, wandering past, voiced similar sentiments.
Or they laughed, shook their heads and walked on.

The Manx is a unique breed of cat that dates back
a few hundred years and is known for its naturally
occurring mutation of the spine. This anomaly results
in a shortening of the tail within a range of lengths.
Sometimes the tails can be of normal length or a stub,
but most of the time it’s simply not there at all!

Focusing On The Felines
By MARJORIE DORFMAN

Originating in the streets of Singapore,
this breed of cat was brought to the
United States in the 1970s by two
American brothers (Hal and Tommy
Meadow). They acquired three local
“drain cats,” which were only one of the
many types of common street felines
known to the city of Singapore.
