When you think about owning a fish tank, the idea of keeping records may not enter your
mind. But written records of your tanks are one of the most valuable tools a fish keeper
can have. Good records will serve as an excellent learning tool, increasing your skill as a
hobbyist, and saving you lots of frustration in the process. This is especially true for
beginners. So, how do you do it?

COMMUNITY TANKS
It’s good to be in a diverse fishy neighborhood

What is a community tank? It is a fish
tank that houses more than one
species, a community of fish
neighbors, so to speak. Some
hobbyists specialize in a particular
species, and their tank holds only
that species. This makes it easy to
consider the needs of your fish,
since fish of the same species
have the same needs for water
parameters, food, and other living
conditions. However, most beginning
hobbyists are interested in so many
different kinds of fish, that it would be difficult to choose just one species to get.

Seacritters - Bringing The Sea To School
By ELSIE WALKER

When Jennifer Crumrine
comes into a classroom, she brings a
part of the sea with her. Crumrine runs
Seacritters, a mobile marine biology
program which allows children to see
sea creatures up close. The program is
usually done in private schools, camps,

Livebearers are the best little freshwater fish a hobbyist could want. They encompass a
range of species, including the ever-popular guppies, mollies, swordtails and my
personal favorites, platys. As the name implies, these fish give birth to live babies (called
fry), unlike most fish who lay eggs. Livebearers are extremely popular in the fish-keeping
hobby. Certainly for every known species, there is a hobbyist somewhere who loves it,
but few fish can match the adoration that livebearers have engendered in the aquarium
hobby, and for good reasons.

What is new tank syndrome? It’s
the undesirable outcome of a
natural, biological cycle that occurs
in new fish tanks when they are
poorly planned. It’s also one of the
reasons many new fish-keepers
abandon the hobby in
discouragement. New tank
syndrome will kill your fish, so you
absolutely want to avoid it.

more interesting to watch in
the fish world than breeding
behavior and baby fish (called
fry). Will the eggs hatch? Will
the fry survive? It’s an
underwater drama played out
in your living-room.
