What do you do when it’s time for bed? Maybe you take a
bath before you slide into your jammies. You probably
brush your teeth and get one last drink of water so you
don’t get thirsty in the middle of the night. You say your
prayers, grab your teddy or your stuffed puppy and pull
the blankets up around your chin. Maybe your mom or
dad reads you a bedtime story, and when you’re sleepy
and snuggly, you get a kiss goodnight and you’re off to
sleep.

Pig Number One wishes it was that easy. In the new book Goodnight, Sweet Pig by Linda
Bailey, illustrated by Josée Masse, Pig Number One is all ready for bed, but after the kind
of night she’s having, she might never get her forty winks!

It was late at night, and Pig Number One was ready to go to sleep. She fluffs her pillows
and reaches to turn out the light. Her teddy is beside her and she’s sooooo tired.

But Pig Number Two is not sleepy at all. She likes to read and eat buttered toast, so she
climbs into bed with her book and her plate. That’s okay with Pig Number Three,
because she isn’t tired, either. She really just wants to paint her toenails and watch her
favorite show on television. It’s much too early for a pig to go to sleep!

Pig Number Four is a pretty talented guy, and he’s joined by Pig Number Five with his
drum set. Pig Number Six is a baker, so he brings the food. Pig Number Seven looks
beautiful in her wedding dress, but it gets pretty messy in a room with so many pigs. Pig
Number Eight and Pig Number Nine bring in more entertainment (including a pony) and

Pig Number Ten brings his whole basketball team in a limousine! It looks like one big
party in the pig pen.

Poor little Pig Number One! Can’t a girl just get some sleep?

It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a children’s picture book that I loved as much
as I loved Goodnight, Sweet Pig. Not only are Josée Masse’s detailed, action-packed
illustrations incredibly cute and colorful, but they’ll also give kids plenty to look at while
they’re searching for Pig Number One.

Author Linda Bailey’s story-poem is so darn delightful that you’ll have to suppress the
desire to say “Awwww.” Read it aloud to your kids and you’re almost guaranteed to get
giggles, but be prepared. They’re going to want to hear this story re-read again and
again. Bonus:
Goodnight, Sweet Pig doubles as a counting book, which means children
will learn numbers 1 through 10 forwards and backwards as they page through this
times-ten adorable book.

For pre-schoolers and kids up to age 6 or 7, as well as for parents who love a good
children’s book, this one is great to take to bed or anywhere.
Goodnight, Sweet Pig is a
charmer, and it will make your kids squeal with delight.
